Call for Proposals
We invite you to dive into the ‘Communicating Discovery Science’ theme by submitting a proposal to participate in this symposium to share experiences and insights into connecting people with basic, foundational science. We encourage diverse forms of participation, such as research papers, practical case studies, and creative approaches to making discovery science accessible and relevant to diverse audiences.
The deadline for submission is 31 May 2024.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- Evidence of best practice for engaging diverse public audiences with basic, discovery science.
- Making a case for the relevance of basic science that goes beyond immediate utility and potential practical applications.
- Public perceptions of basic discovery science and its influence on public engagement activities.
- The implications of the differences between what people want from science (could be about what science can do for them) versus what basic scientists may focus on when they engage with the public (which may be more about the joy of doing science).
- The values and principles that (should) underpin communication and engagement of basic sciences.
- Monitoring, measuring and evaluating the outcomes and impacts of efforts to engage public audiences with basic, discovery science, including setting concrete, actionable communication and engagement goals for communicating basic science and developing effective indicators for public engagement with basic sciences.
- Engaging people with discovery science using emotional connections such as wonder, curiosity and joy.
- Creative approaches to engagement with basic science through storytelling, art, theatre and other ways of working across disciplines.
- Research environments that encourage and support scientists working in basic science to engage more (and more effectively) with public and policy audiences.
- Developing a supportive community of practice in discovery science communication
